The Museum's story
The Musée en Herbe is a love story between Art and Audience, a utopian concept that’s now about 30 years old. It is born through a friendship driven by the same ideal: developing sensitivity to art is a factor of self-development and personal growth, and it is important to provide to as many people as possible the opportunity of making this discovery.
With a little disrespect, lots of humour, affection and good ideas, the Musée en Herbe has tried to adapt culture by offering an active pedagogy, designed for a young audience. Sylvie Girardet and Claire Merleau-Ponty founded the Musée en Herbe in the Jardin d’Acclimatation in 1975, supported by the “Fondation de la Vocation”.
This museum is a different kind of museum; it presents Exhibitions-games based on artistic and socially conscious topics, conceived specifically for family viewing.
This original pedagogy is based on game and humour, and develops the sensitivity, curiosity and creativity of the child.
The Museum receives about 70 000 visitors a year (70 % from school).
It is run by an association according to the 1901 Law, receives funding by the City of Paris and is supported from time to time by the State, the region “Ile de France” and some firms.
From 1986 till 1994, the team of the Musée en Herbe has worked for, and then managed the Cultural centre " La Halle Saint Pierre " in the 18th district of Paris.
Since April 2008, The Musée en Herbe has a second address: Come and see more of our exhibitions at 21 Hérold Street in the 1st district of Paris!
